What to Wear for your Family Photos!
As professional photographers, this is our number one question from our clients:
What Do I Wear for My Family Photos??
A perfectly good question, we know how difficult it is trying to coordinate multiple outfits, random patterns, pastels, brights, and neutrals!
No worries at all friends we are here to help!
So go on…fix a cup of coffee or pour a glass of wine and let’s talk about
What to Wear for Family Photos!
First let’s be perfectly honest, I’m no fashionista!
What I do know is photography and the colors and patterns that are pleasing the eye and to the locations where we create our magic within.
My first word of advice is please be YOURSELF.
For instance, let’s just say you are a relaxed free flowing person however you see that traditional classic beach picture where everyone is wearing those perfect pressed khaki pants and crisp white shirts.
That’s the classic beach portrait look,
so that’s what you should go with….right??
WRONG, oh so Wrong! Now if that khaki/white look is YOU, then for sure by all means go with the classic khaki/white look. It’s a classic.
However if it’s truly just NOT you, then please please please think about who you are, the style you love and just go a bit milder with that vision. Why do I recommend milder from your own style? Typically with full families not everyone has the same style. This being said milder is typically easier to find styles that flow with one another within a family.
CLASSIC KHAKI & WHITE:
If you love the look of white & khaki we simply adore how this family combined the two colors without being too “matchy-matchy”
The white dresses, pants and shorts are a pleasing combination of tans, khaki and whites within their tops, bottoms and dresses.
As you can see this is very pleasing to one’s eye verses the standard boring look of everyone doing white tops with khaki bottoms.
This Ocean Isle Beach, NC Session enjoyed the “White & Khaki Look”
FUN & FREE FLOWING :
I love calling this look a Free Flowing Style of Simply being yourself!
There is a timeless look of the flowy simplicity of the white dresses, yet the fun free flowing look of the little girl’s tutu as she brings a bit of whimsy with her pink tutu dress.
They brought in a pop of color in the grandmother’s top, and grandchildren’s tops. Notice how nothing is too “matchy matchy”
This Bald Head Island, NC Session enjoyed the “Free Flowing Look”
WHITE & BLUES:
Calming Coastal White and Blues have forever been a popular classic clothing look for family photos.
I love how this family brought in chambray blues, paired up with the simplicity of timeless white.
This beautiful look was accomplished by combining a mixture of white dresses, pants, and shorts without being too “matchy matchy”
This Bald Head Island, NC Session enjoyed the “White & Blues Look”
Pretty in pastels!
As you can see Pastels are very soothing to one’s eye. Pastels provide a sweet, calm, soft look.
What I love about this look is how the family decided to wear a floral printed dress and classic button down men’s shirt. It’s indeed a large pattern on the dress, (which can be tricky) however having only one large patterned dress in addition to the similar little girl’s little lace dresses creates a very pleasing look to one’s eye.
By adding in VERY Cute Accessories Polished the Look.
The Accessories are also very useful for keeping the hair out of the little one’s eyes and the little boy’s straw hat…just so darn CUTE!
This Oak Island, NC Session enjoyed the “Pastel Look”
POP OF COLOR:
How about a POP of Color!
What more can I say other than cheerful, full of happy and fun!
I enjoyed the fun vibes this family decided to bring into their family photo session outfits!
They decided to match their little girl’s dresses by bringing in the color on the Dad’s pants, however the entire family made sure not to go too “matchy matchy”
This Bald Head Island, NC Session enjoyed the “Bright Colors Look”
PURPLE & PRINTS:
I feel these colors are overlooked, however I fell in love with them!
Purple and Prints are oh so beautiful!
I love how it provides a nice contrast of color to the sandy beach and I adore the twin girls printed dresses which provides almost a timeless vintage type of look.
This family created a nicely flowing look by dressing their twin little girls in matching dresses without being “matchy matchy” and addition picked up the same colors within their parent outfits.
This Oak Island, NC Session enjoyed the “Purple & Prints Look”
